Canoeing is a great sport that can involve the whole family. It enables people to visit spectacular parts of our country that few others get to! In KZN we are blessed with great, life-supporting rivers and canoeists are fortunate to be able to choose from many options.Â
The sport requires much voluntary commitment to create clubs and organise events, and many hours have been dedicated by literally hundreds of people. The Midmar Canoe Club (MID) is one example of a positive development in support of canoeing. In this regard the Midmar Canoe Club would like to honour founder members, as well as other stalwarts, who have consistently supported canoeing over the years.
The honours board, below, reflects the names of the Honorary Life Members of the Midmar Canoe Club to whom we all owe much gratitude:
Merrill King,
Bruce Acutt,
Chris Slater,
Shaun Muller,
Kirsten Oliver
Dave McKenzie
Merrill has extensive experience in the canoeing field has been a member of the South African Olympic Committee (SAOC) representing canoeing and other Olympic sports. She is the manager for canoeing and is a holder of numerous river marathon titles in the veteran and master classes. King also ran two Comrades Marathons and several Two Oceans ultra-marathons. Further, she was part of Team South Africa at the London Olympic Games and rates being asked to manage the canoeing team at the Games as her greatest achievement on the sporting front. King also broke new ground in the administrative field by being the first woman to hold the position of president of Canoeing South Africa [2008-2010].
Bruce is a canoeing stalwart. He also serves as a Safety and Proficiency officer. He is always supportive and helpful with beginners and is extremely knowledgeable about every facet of the sport. Bruce is also the organiser of the Tuesday evening Midmar dice.
Chris was Vice Chair of the club, and for many years the Treasurer. He is also a committed race organizer. Along with Kevin Palmer, a former Chairman, he organised many exciting and popular canoe races!
Kirsten was initially the Midmar Canoe Club Chair-person. A canoeist her whole life, she has completed more Drak Challenges than just about anyone! Kirsten is a key member of the Oliver family canoeing dynasty, along with her sister, Lorna, and father, John the Race Organiser Extraordinaire!
Shaun is a founder member of the Midmar Canoe Club. He was there when things got going at the Fernhill Pub all those years ago. A keen runner and paddler he is always willing to help in any capacity, when needed!
