The Midmar mini marathon begins in front of the Henley Midmar Yacht Club (HMYC). Paddlers will stand on the bank next to their boats which will be arranged with K1s in front and K2s behind.
From the start, the paddlers will head to the right (to the west) and paddle in an anti-clockwise direction around the mast of the sunken yacht in the bay in front of the chalets (take care of the stays which support the mast). Then head in the direction of the Midmar Mile start. They will keep on the shore side of a buoy opposite the “Boat Shop” (Midmar Boating and Hire). From there they proceed straight to the takeout at the first portage at Hoby Point (do not cut straight across the dam to Hoby Point from the start).
Carry your boats on the tar road that leads towards the Dukuduku Camp Site. 500m after the T junction, just before Dukuduku Camp site, turn left down a dirt road to the watering table - THIS IS A CHANGE FROM THE TRADITIONAL "QUARRY" PUT IN (see location at this link). Put in and paddle due south into “Pylon Bay” … keep paddling south for about 4kms and go around the bouy before the overhead powerlines. After going around the bouy, head for the takeout for the second portage at the east bank of Pylon Bay - DO NOT PADDLE TOWARDS THE WATERING TABLE - THE TABLE IS AT THE END OF THE PORTAGE. The ±1.9km portage is along the road on the edge of the dam.
Put in at the watering table and paddle around the peninsula and across the bay to the Thurlow take out and run on the road across the Thurlow peninsula ±950m). Put in on the eastern bank of the dam at the watering table and paddle ±5km to the bouy at the eastern corner of the dam wall (to the right hand side (east end) of the dam wall).
Paddle around the buoy in the corner and then across the dam wall back to the finish at HMYC. The total distance for K1s and K2s doing the Long Course is ±22kms.
K3s & K4s may only compete in the Long Course event and will start in the first batch. There is only 1 additional rule for K3s & K4s:
1 member of a K3 (and 2 members of a K4) are required to run the portages while carrying their paddles while the other 2 crewmembers paddle the craft to the put in (K3s & K4s may not be carried on the Thurlow portage). A different members of the crew may be used for each portage if preferred.
The watering tables are located at the put in of the portages so the "paddling pair" of a K3 or K4 may leave their craft on the shore and collect refreshments for themselves. The total distance for K3s & K4s will be ±27kms.
Midmar can get wild in strong winds so it is suggested that a fuel-saver or spare splash cover be used on the open cockpit when crew members are running the portages.
Start will be after the Long Course race. Short Course paddlers will wear a red elastic band.
Follow exactly the same course until you get to the seconding table on the first portage (1.4km). At this point turn down to the water to the put in and paddle back towards Hoby Point (East). After hugging the bank for 500m, cut across the dam to meet the Long Course paddlers at the Pylon Bay Peninsula - NB Please keep a look out for speed boats while crossing the dam.
Follow the Long Course route to the Thurlow portage and then on to the finish. The distance of the short course is approximately 14.7km.
NB ...
Do not cut straight across the dam from the start to Hoby Point.
Do not paddle towards the seconding table in Pylon bay - this is the put in after the portage - the take out is 2km further into the bay!
Do not paddle straight from the Thurlow put-in to the finish. Head towards the bouy/safety boat to the east (right) of the Dam wall.
Do not cross the line of buoys in front of the dam wall, i.e. do not enter the restricted space between the buoy line and the dam wall.
Do enjoy the race!
